Pollination and emergence of the olive:

Nature takes its course and once again the flowering and setting of the fruit (the olive) arrives.

Mergaoliva emergence olive 2021

The spring period has started with little rainfall in our area of Jaén. It seems that this is something we have to get used to. Although the rains have not been with us, the temperatures have been quite moderate: we have not yet had days of excessive heat as in some years in the past at this time.

Pollination has taken place, although it has been a year in which pollen has not been very present in the atmosphere. I remember some years when everything was impregnated with the characteristic yellow colour of olive pollen, even though we were relatively far from the olive grove.

Mergaoliva. Olive flowers

Olive flowering has been exceptional. Almost all the olive groves, whether dry or irrigated, have performed quite well. As for what the harvest of the new season will be like, it remains to be seen. We have already been able to observe a decline due to attacks by pray, which is also a common occurrence year after year. In spite of this, as there has been good fruit set in general, it seems that there will still be a good part of the fruit that was expected.

This olive tree shows the abundant TRAMA that some of it will become olives.

Bee collecting pollen. Mergaoliv

The bees, our allies in the countryside, take advantage of the opportunity to collect them.

These small flowers, also called TRAMA, will give rise to the fruit of the olive tree: the olive. In a few months, this olive will give us the prized Extra Virgin Olive Oil. In the meantime, we take care of our fields in a respectful way so that they give us the best of them.

The size of the incipient olives is very similar to this time last year. A comparison can be seen in the previous season's blog post:

While the newly emerged olives develop, other crops such as cereals also continue to develop, reaching their final period with the help of irrigation water.

The plant cover is already withering, so it is time to shred it to serve as organic matter, but also to protect the soil from the sun and heat that will be with us in a few days.

These poppies reach the end of their life cycle in front of the bromus plant cover of one of our olive groves in the province of Jaén.

From now on, the "uphill" begins: there is little juice in the soil, the plant has to bring forth the fruit, and in the coming months the olive tree will have to face a great endurance race against the expected sweltering heat.

We will be watching events unfold...
