Olive grove monitoring May 2024: Flowering and setting of the olives.

The long-awaited rains have arrived and the countryside has started to recover..

The best news, which is a change from the last few years, is that we have finally had a visit from some cloudy evolutions that have left us with rainwater. In previous publications we insisted on the continuous dry seasons that we have been suffering. However, this year, at last, we have been accompanied by the positivity that this change in rainfall has brought us, and which has completely regenerated the olive grove landscape.

It could be said that the situation was on the verge of hecatomb: many olive trees were on the verge of dying. But these last waters have brought the olive groves back to life, as well as other crops that have also been grateful.

Flowering has been brought forward, as has been the norm in recent years, possibly due to the desire to develop the olive tree. As the months go by we will see the evolution of the other phases: growth, stone creation and lipogenesis.

Making predictions as of today:

Although we could say that we are not expecting a great harvest, given that the olive tree has been under continuous stress, the crop has been abundant. Flowering and fruit set have also been quite prosperous: this year we have not had days of extreme heat as in previous years in April and May.

On the other hand, due to the lack of growth in the new stalks, the amount of olive that the olive tree will carry forward will not be what the grower wanted or expected. But there is no doubt that the situation has changed and that next season could be average in terms of the amount of olives. All of this if there are no other circumstances that prevent it.

As a consequence of the recent rains, apart from the prosperity of the olive groves, there has been an incipient vegetation cover with an unusual vigour compared to previous years. Due to the moisture stored in the soil, the canopy has developed under pressure, so keeping it in check has also had its extra costs. We have been using mechanical and animal means to control the weeds competing with the olive grove.

As is well known, MERGAOLIVA always uses environmentally friendly means in its ECOLOGICAL olive groves. Also noteworthy is the diversity of grass species that have been seen this year, with a predominant proliferation of wild alfalfa and dandelion, among others.

If we take a look at last year's blog post, we can see the difference in the grass cover. At that time it was almost withered. This year, due to the rains, it still has vitality in the first ten days of May.

There is no doubt that this flora, which coexists with the olive grove, will give quality and nuances to the EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) that we will obtain later, once the milling process has been completed.

And once again we try to emphasise that an olive grove with vegetation cover and free of chemical products gives life all around it. MERGAOLIVA does its bit for the preservation of life in its olive groves.

As the days go by, we continue to take care of our ECOLOGICAL olive grove with great affection, giving it all the good things that it will eventually give us back in return.
